The water is free, but you have to get it yourself
Szőreg, Újszentiván – The buildings were once the brick factory’s service flats, which had water supply from the the factory. As the plant ceased to exist, the agricultural cooperative took over the yard. The apartments could be bought very favorably. Their value today is only 300 thousand forints.
The residents used the opportunity, now they are the victims of the circumstances: they cannot sell their own property, but since they have their own home, they can’t apply for social housing.
Where do they live? Szeged-Szőreg Farm, Szentiván Vineyard, Szőregi Street, Brick Factory Vineyard?
It would be much easier to rename this place than elevate it from the sixties.
Here lives Ferenc’s wife, Mariann, her parents and children. Six people in two rooms without water and gas.

Although there is a water line inside the buildings, everyone who lives in that neighborhood carries water from the public spout built four years ago next to the brick factory in Szőreg. Nomadic conditions, but that’s still better than it was before.
Mariann and her younger son, Peter often brings water to their neighbors.

They live on disability pension, disability allowance, care allowance and family allowance, which is nearly 150 thousand forints. They are given an increased nursing fee, but because of that they lost their children’s free meals. The grandparents help with the meals in exchange for accommodation.

Mariann has a casual job as a farm hand in a rose garden, but in the winter she does the snow plowing too. In that case the grandmother takes care of the children.

Adam is 16 years old, studying at a high school in Szeged, Peter 12 studies at the neighboring village, at the elementary school of Tiszasziget. Both are good students.

Because they don’t have bathroom, the householder is being given a bath by his wife in the other room, which has a stove. In the smaller room of the house, live Mariann’s retired parents, Gizella and Ferenc. They wait there for the water to warm up.

One of his hands was paralyzed, both of his legs were amputated of the householder, who had been caring for his partner for years. The fragile woman lifts him back and forth from the wheelchair to bed.

There are ruined row houses in the area former brick factory. One of them is theirs. Troublesome neighbors and tumbling roof – this is their home.
